To celebrate a year of independence Saab produced a numbered limited edition Saab 9-3 Convertible Independence Edition Areo. Initially only 366 of these cars were going to be produced, symbolizing each day of independence that year plus one day for the start of the new year. The cars were equipped with special 18" 5-spoke wheels, beige leather seats with orange trim, carbon-fiber and leather on certain parts of the interior, a welcome message on the display and a unique turbo boost gauge, an orange stitched leather steering wheel and floor mats with grey lining... Saab offered the customer a choice between 3 engines: 180hp 1.9 TTiD, 220hp 2.0T and a Biopower version. All engines were available with six-speed automatic or manual transmissions. Unfortunately, there were only 47 of these cars produced by Saab because of it's bankruptcy.
A good client of ours came to us with the quest for a 9-3 Independence Edition TTiD. He already did some research himself on the location of some Independence Edition cars. We inspected some that were for sale online. But the one that was in best shape was at a dealership in Italy that is owned by a good friend of ours. We gave him a call to inform about the state of the vehicle. After some conversations over the phone, the client made the decisions to get the car in Italy.
A flight was booked to Italy so that our commercial director and the client could pick up the car together. The flew to Italy and took a taxi to the dealer in Modena. The car was inspected and test driven. The client was over the moon about the car and the state it was in, so the car was bought and driven back home on the transit plates that we provided.
All the necessary paperwork and technical inspections that are mandatory when you want to import a car were done. We also gave the car a thorough check and made a list of maintenance points and upgrades.
We replaced the timing belt and water pump. During this service we also removed the swirl valves from the inlet manifold. The DPF was removed from the engine and the software modified so a DPF error will never be shown again. The software was also updated to our KCPerformance Stage 2 chiptune to raise the output to 235hp and 460nm.
The chassis was also upgraded with a set of Bilstein B6 shock absorbers and KCPerformance springs. This setup results in a nice lowering but still has comfortable OEM handling with a touch of sportiveness. We also replaced the bushings in the front wishbones and rear trailing arms with our KCPerformance polyurethane bushings.
The client now owns a Saab 9-3 Aero KCPerformance Independence Edition TTiD convertible. We know, it's a mouthful, but if you look at the car it's the only way to properly describe such a beautiful car that is a piece of Saab history. We felt blessed that we could be part of this client's dream purchase and we wish him a lot of pleasure driving this piece of automotive history.
