Certain technologies use on modern diesel engines work well in theory, but in real life they don't work that well. EGR can be good for the environment, but recirculating exhaust gasses back into the inlet piping can clog up your inlet manifold and can result in faulty components like the EGR-valve, swirl valves, DPF,... It's like running while breathing in the air that you breath out. The DPF is another technology that seems a great idea on paper, but this filter can clog up and result in malfunctions or engine damage. There is a regeneration process to clean the filter, but this process just blows out all the soot that the filter has stored, back in to the air. This is rather contradicting with it's function.
That is why we removed the DPF on this Volvo XC90 D5. We removed it from under the car and cut it open. The filter was removed from the housing and the housing was welded back shut and reinstalled. The software was also modified so we could disable the regeneration process. The EGR-valve was closed and disabled through software modifications.
The owner of this Volvo XC90 D5 never has to worry about the reliability and durability of his engine regarding the DPF or EGR as these problems will never pop up, this benefits the confidence you have in your car and the pleasure you have while driving it.
